Dr Stiofán Mac Suibhne

Osteopath and Mindfulness Teacher

Stiofán is an osteopath, western medical acupuncture practitioner and mindfulness teacher.  Osteopathic medicine is a holistic philosophy of healthcare which considers health and well being to be the result of complex / dynamic integration of all the body’s systems, with the mind and spiritual, social and environmental realms.  In the osteopathic approach to health the body is seen as the ‘primary machine of life’ and dysfunction and strain patterns in the body need to be addressed in order to live as healthfully as we can.

He has a master’s degree in rehabilitation and a particular interest in helping people live well with chronic pain and long-term health conditions.  Stiofan uses a wide range of osteopathic manual techniques including gentle approaches suitable for children, debilitated and elderly frail patients.  He treats patients from across the lifespan – including children over 2 years of age – and according to patient preference, uses solely osteopathic manual therapy, acupuncture or combines the two

He has a number of areas that he is particularly interested in:

  • Headache – migraine, sinus, cervicogenic and tension type headaches
  • Musculoskeletal conditions – back, neck and joint pain – shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle and hip
  • The management of complex / chronic pain conditions such as post stroke pain, atypical facial pain & TMJ dysfunction, neuropathic pain syndromes including complex regional pain syndrome and diabetic neuropathy
  • Occupational injuries – overuse & postural strain patterns and vocational rehabilitation
  • Sport injuries – rehabilitation and return to sport programmes
  • Pre-habilitation – ensuring that patients awaiting joint replacement surgery maintain the maximum function possible and health of the soft tissues to ensure good outcomes from their procedure
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation for joint replacement surgery in older patients with osteoarthritis
  • Patients with chronic disease / long-term conditions such as COPD, asthma, arthritis
  • Stress management – musculoskeletal pain and postural problems are often aggravated by stress.
  • Mindfulness – one to one and group work to support resilience and health

His practice of acupuncture is largely restricted to musculoskeletal conditions, complex pain presentations, functional disorders, such irritable bowel and bladder syndromes, pregnancy related nausea, hormonal hot flushes and PCOS.

He is a NSW WorkCover and Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries Scheme registered service provider, treats DVA patients and patients on Medicare Chronic Disease Management referrals from GPs.  Most health funds offer benefits for osteopathic treatment.
